Lane is the author of Develop a Leadership Plan: Become a Great Leader and co-author of Terra Incognita: A Navigation Aid for Energy Leaders. He has also written several articles for World Energy Magazine, Silver Fox Advisors monthly newsletter and for the Houston Chronicle's Fuel Fix.
Lane was a member of the Greater Houston Partnership and Chairman of the Energy Collaborative. He is currently on the Educational Advisory board for IPAA/PESA and was a former board member of the Houston Technology Center, the Sam Houston Area Boy Scouts and Houston Zoological Society. Lane also worked with CASE to create the Energy City of the Future Competition.
As author of Develop A Leadership Plan Become A Great Leader, Lane's passion is leadership mentoring. His unique background of executive leadership, consulting, teaching leadership, and executive coaching provides high content high impact mentoring to a diversity of clients from entrepreneurs to senior leaders in large companies.
Lane spent over 29 years with Shell Oil Company with half that time in senior executive positions including Vice President Corporate Planning, CFO, Regional Coordinator Far East & Australasia (Royal Dutch Shell), Director East Zone Oil Products (Royal Dutch Shell), and President Shell Chemical Company. He was also the Executive Vice President of SAIC’s energy practice and CEO of Grand Basin, a joint venture between SAIC and Halliburton.
He taught Corporate Strategy and Strategic Leadership courses at the University of Houston as a Visiting Professor for over five years. During that time, Lane was Executive Director of the Global Energy Management Institute and also taught energy courses. He and Christopher Ross authored Terra Incognita: A Navigation Aid for Energy Leaders, published in 2007.
Lane has been a Silver Fox Advisor for over a decade and mentors on their CEO Roundtable program. He is President of Sloan Consulting Services, Inc., mentoring companies of all sizes. He serves on the boards of QuantaPoint and Davidson Instruments, as well as the advisory board of BlueLance.
Lane graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in Business (Magna Cum Laude) in 1969 and an MS in Management Science in 1970. In his undergraduate, he received the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key for highest GPA and Sigma Iota Epsilon Aware for Excellence in Management. Later, he earned an MS in Accounting and an MBA in Finance from the University of Houston. Lane was formerly a CPA. He was pursuing his PHD in Finance at UH but left the program when Shell Oil Company promoted him to Senior Management in 1985.
